November 2, 2017 Patton Twp Building 6:30 – 8:30 PM Monthly Guild meeting, official business begins at 7 PM.  This month, Susan Magargee will present a brief program on slip stitch patterns as an introduction to mosaic knitting.  Slip Stitch is a way to fool the eye of the observer into seeing something that looks much, much more complicated to knit than it really is.  Using only one color per row, slip stitching allows color patterns to emerge using color from the row below.  We will casually explore this method through example allowing its ease and usefulness to come to light.  There will be an opportunity to knit along to experience various aspects of slip stitch patterning.  Bring several colors of matching weight yarns in colors that please along with needles appropriate for the weight.  One swatch uses double points, but most are fine with single points.  If you like, start several swatches of about 15 – 20 stitches using one color, then purl one row leaving a long yarn for working the swatch.  We’ll be using two or three colors for each swatch over several rows.  We’ll adapt as we go.

October 5, 2017  Patton Twp Building 6:30 – 8:30 PM  Monthly Guild meeting, official business begins at 7 PM.  Our program this month will once again be presented by Chelsey Fisher who will enlighten us on the mysteries of Steeking.  Steeking is a method for knitting an article in the round that later is cut at a designated place to allow it to be opened up to insert a button band or zipper or to attach sleeves to a garment.  This enables, for example, the knitting of a Fair Isle piece that is all knit stitch without purls that can be made into a cardigan by cutting, WITH SCISSORS, at the designated stitches and binding off the loose stitches to form the opening that doesn’t unravel.  You’ll see…

Here are Chelsey’s instructions for the workshop sample: Materials:  Worsted yarn (something not slippery), stitch markers, a contrast color yarn, a knitting needle (double points or circular), crochet hook that fits the yarn, darning needle, scissors.  With the Main Yarn and double pointed or 16-inch circular needles, cast on 13 stitches, place marker, cast on 25 more stitches. [38 stitches]  Place a different color marker and join for working in the round, being careful to not twist the stitches. Round 1: Knit to next marker, sm, p1, k10, p1, knit to end of round.  Repeat Round 1 until piece measures about 4 inches from cast-on edge. Bind off.

Chelsey will guide us through the technique that could make Fearless Steekers of us all!

This month we will have a reprise of Bonnie Ottaviani’s Tension and Pain Relief Strategies which she presented during For the Love of Fiber_2017. Do you push for “just one more row?”  Does that additional row give you tense shoulders, aching hands and wrists? Do you sit for hours at your spinning wheel only to feel strained or stuck when you do stand up? Do you have aches and pains from working on a project too long? This Knit & Yoga session will show how to avoid those project stoppers while sharing your passion for knitting, crocheting, or spinning with other yarn and fiber lovers. Bring your current works-in-progress and while you work, you’ll learn important strategies and a little yoga to avoid repetitive stress injuries while sharing our passion for all things fiber! The mission is to inspire you to be physically and mentally healthy to pursue the activities you love through both yoga and a healthy lifestyle.
